PRC Schedules Public Comment Hearings on PNM’s Smart Meter Proposal in Silver City

SANTA FE – New Mexico Public Regulation Commissioner Sandy Jones on Wednesday, June 1, signed an order scheduling public comment hearings in Silver City regarding an application submitted by Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) for approval of the company’s Advanced Meter Infrastructure Project.

In this case, Case No. 15-00312-UT, PNM has requested the Commission’s approval of its Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Project. If granted by the Commission, the requested approvals will allow PNM to proceed with a program of replacing its existing electricity consumption and demand meters with AMI meters and equipment that will allow PNM to remotely read customers’ meters. The company states that the costs of AMI will be less than $87.2 million.

The Commission has scheduled two public comment hearings in Silver City to accommodate the strong public interest locally on Thursday, June 23. The first is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., and the second at 5 p.m. Both will be held at the County Commission Meeting Room, Grant County Administration Center, 1400 Highway 180 East, Silver City.

The Commission may set a time limit on the length of comments in order to accommodate all who seek to provide public comment.”

What They Don’t Tell Us
They want to install
new water meters
in our town.
 What they don’t tell us
is that these meters
frequently pulse
 What they don’t tell us
is that children and adults
get sick with headaches,
and other maladies,
from these meters.
 What they don’t tell us
is that this is just the beginning
of more “smart” appliances
that track what utilities we use, and when,
invading our privacy,
without our permission.
 What they don’t tell us
is why we should accept
this “mandatory” installation
without question,
without impartial research,
without holding a public hearing.
 What they don’t tell us
is that if we don’t accept
these meters,
they will
turn off our water.
 What they don’t tell us
is that somewhere,
beneath the surface,
greed smacks its jaws,
counts out the money.
 What they don’t tell us
is if we let them
abuse their power
in this way,
what will be next?

  1. Is there a letter of refusal to send to PNM for those lucky ones who haven’t had a digital meter sneaked onto their property yet?
